Mark 14:32-42
Although I do not know you personally, I can say with some level of confidence that you currently are suffering, have suffered greatly, or will suffer. Sorry!
The Lord Jesus’s actions in the face of suffering in Mark 14:32-42 are very instructive to us on how to face suffering.
Here are some of the things he did, which you can copy.
He had company (Mark 14:32-34)
The Lord, when his hour of suffering drew near, did not isolate himself. Suffering is even more painful when the sufferer isolates himself. The Lord got his closest companions together and spent some of his most difficult moments before the cross with them. Note that he shared his problem with these trusted friends even though they could not understand it. He drew them close, confided in them, and asked them to pray.
He Prayed (Mark 14:35-42)
The Lord did not sit down drawing up plans on how to deal with the suffering that was coming to him. He understood that the suffering that was coming upon him was approved by God, so he went to God in prayer. The most remarkable thing about his prayer is that he did not pretend, and he did not try to force God’s hand. He admitted honestly to God that he did not like the pain of the suffering that he foresaw. Although he foresaw pain and suffering in his life, he did not try to force God’s hand to take it away. He trusted God and submitted himself to the will of God.
Here are some lessons you can learn on this Holy Thursday from the Lord on how to face suffering.
1. Do not isolate yourself when you suffer. Share your problem with trustworthy people and ask people to pray for you.
2. Do not try to make up your own solution. Believe that the Lord has a good reason for allowing the suffering. Turn to him who runs the universe and ask him to help you trust his will if he will not take the suffering away.
3. Rejoice that Jesus suffered to teach you how to suffer and to make sure your suffering is only temporary.
