We only do things well when we have learned them well and from good teachers. Our passage calls us in 3:13 to forgive one another as the Lord has forgiven us. This means that the Lord showed us how to forgive. We should learn forgiveness from him. How did he forgive us? We learn in 2:13-14 that he forgave us "all our trespasses by canceling the record of debt that stood against us." This means that God does not hold his people accountable for any sins because they have been forgiven in Christ. How then should you forgive? You must forgive people all their sins. You should not hold a sin against someone after claiming that you have forgiven them. Think of someone you are holding a grudge against. How can forgiving them free you from the weight of bitterness and anger? Reflect on how you can be more forgiving in your relationships.
Reflection
Forgiveness is one of the ways we imitate our Lord. He forgave us all our sins, and we imitate in forgiving others when we forgive them all their sins.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for forgiving me and giving me the strength to forgive others. Help me to release any anger or bitterness and to forgive as You have forgiven me. Fill my heart with Your peace and compassion.
