Content
A person given stewardship over anything is expected to give an account to the one who has given them his resources to steward. Pastors and church leaders are stewards, stewarding the people of God entrusted to their stewardship and care by God. God will expect an account of how they cared for you and the other people in your church. You are not to make their work difficult by disrespecting them. If your pastor is preaching the gospel to you, praying for you, counseling you when you need counsel, and making every effort to be a model of Christ to you, why make his life difficult by disrespecting him, not living out the message he is teaching you, and not submitting to his leadership? Your godly, Christ-centered, Bible teachers and leaders deserve your full respect. Your respect for them will bring them joy. They will have joy because your respect reflects how God is working in your heart through their faithful ministry. "This verse doesn’t teach that Christians should obey leaders in every situation. Christians should submit to their leaders as the latter are faithful to the gospel. When believers stay true to the gospel, leaders are full of joy; and if they turn away, then leaders will be grieved" (Schreiner, Hebrews, 425).
Reflection
God will ask your spiritual leaders for an account of how they led you. Your obedience and submission to them give them joy because they make them confident that they will give a good account of you to God. When you disrespect them by disobeying and not submitting to the message they preach to you, they are grieved because they know they will not give a good account of you before God.
Prayer
Dear heavenly father, help me to obey my pastors and the other spiritual leaders you have put over me. Help me to be one of the people about whom they are confident to give a good account to God. Forgive me for failing to do this well, and help me to do it well going forward.
