Paul is Philemon’s spiritual leader and also of age, yet writes with humility, pleading for forgiveness rather than commanding him to forgive his slave. He has the right to command Philemon, yet he chooses to plead from the place of love. For the “sake of love” in this verse means Paul is appealing to Philemon’s emotions, urging him to do it because of the love and fellowship they share in Christ as believers. It is this love that keeps Paul humble in his mission of mediation. Humility is one thing many people lack in their approach to building peace. It is good to know your authority in Christ, but when it comes to mediating forgiveness, that authority must be used with wisdom.
Reflection
Your authority in Christ should never be used as a tool of mediation. People ought to reconcile with one another out of reverence for Christ, not you.
Prayer
Trust God for grace to be humble if you have an opportunity to mediate forgiveness.
