Scripture calls on us to be humble and shows how that humility should look like. It begins by being like-minded, avoiding selfish ambition, and vain conceit. When people seek to show themselves up, they take all the glory for their successes disregarding whatever contributions that were made for that success to be registered. The apostle in this passage is calling on all believers to be humble toward one another. the foundation of this call is their spiritual brotherhood and their ultimate subjection to Christ. Looking at the interest of others first before yours is a sign of humility that the human nature does not appreciate. The self-centeredness that considers only one’s own rights, plans and interests must be replaced by a broader outlook that includes the interests of fellow Christians. But this does not mean neglecting your own rights and interest and those of your family.
Reflection
True humility, as this passage teaches, is rooted in our shared identity in Christ and expressed through a mindset that resists self-promotion and selfish ambition. Scripture calls us to look beyond our own plans and desires so we can genuinely consider the needs and concerns of others—an act that does not come naturally to human nature. Yet this outward-looking posture does not demand the neglect of our own responsibilities or those of our families; rather, it invites us to hold our interests in balance while valuing the contributions and well-being of those around us. In doing so, we reflect Christ’s own humility and strengthen the bond of our spiritual community.
Prayer
Trust God to be selfless as you relate with others.
