The book of Philemon has four main characters: Christ, Paul, Philemon, and Onesimus. Paul is pleading on behalf of Philemon’s runaway slave, Onesimus. Onesimus, as a slave, fled from his master when he committed a crime, but met Paul who helped him to become useful in Christ. Paul, in trying to mediate forgiveness for Onesimus, acknowledged the role of Philemon in his own life and others. He prays that his faith may further show its power in his relation to others. Mediating forgiveness is an important task needed in the world today due to the hurts caused by crises and family conflicts. In mediating forgiveness, we must be gentle in our approach, acknowledging that the offended has the reason to be angry.
Reflection
Christians look for ways to reconcile one another. They do not provoke conflict or encourage conflict between Christians.
Prayer
Ask God to give you the grace and desire to mediate forgiveness.
