Living according to God's commands is one of the highest forms of respect we can show him. Obedience to God's word reflects our recognition of His authority and our desire to live in alignment with His will for our lives.

In our text, Moses commanded the Israelites to follow God's commands carefully. This call to obedience is a call to do what is good for them. Moses did not tell them that their obedience was going to make God happy. He told them obedience to God will lead to life for them and well-being and long life in the Promised Land.

We should never think that God stands to lose something if we do not obey him. We alone have something to lose when we disobey God. Moses knew this. As the mediator between God and man, he told them to be careful not to disobey God.
The Lord Jesus, the new and perfect mediator between man and God who united man to God through his death on the cross, told his followers, "Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him." (John 14:21 ESV).

True followers of Jesus keep his commandments.
