It is the desire of everyone to be debt free but it seems difficult to live in this life without owing someone. For example, Christians owe submission and honor to the civil authorities, but there is greater debt they owe everyone. The essential ingredient for Christian service is love. This is the only debt we should confidently owe others. When you are conscious that you are owing a debt, you will be intentional in paying it. So we should constantly and intentionally express this love to those we owe. Christians must make doing good their obligation as a way of fleeing from the vices of verse 9a. The best way to pay this debt of love is to love your enemies as you love yourself. Such love does no harm to its neighbor. It is loving with the kind of love that Jesus loves the church. We therefore, should consciously and consistently pay our debt to others daily because this debt can never be settled.
Reflection
This verse reminds us that while we may spend our lives trying to avoid financial debt, there is one debt Christians are meant to carry every day—the debt of love. We owe love to everyone, not as a burden, but as a commitment to live like Christ. When we remember that love is something we must continually “pay,” it helps us be intentional in showing kindness, doing good, and treating even our enemies with compassion. This kind of love never harms others and reflects the way Jesus loves His church. Because God’s love toward us is endless, our debt of love to others is one we can never fully repay, but one we should faithfully give each day.
Prayer
only God can enable us to love our enemies, turn to Him for grace.
