The Bible usually calls us to do things that are contrary to our nature. It is contrary to our nature to love our nature. The natural thing is to hate our enemies and curse them. God wants us to love and pray for our enemies. When you love and pray for someone your heart wants you to hate and curse, you will find it easy to forgive them when they do something wrong to you. This command, which is contrary to nature, is an indirect call to spirit dependence to be able to do what it commands. Only the spirit of God working in our hearts can make us able to keep this command, so we must be very spirit-dependent through prayer to obey the command.
Reflection
The command to love your enemy and pray for those who hate you is a call to something contrary to nature. We must then take it as a call to a more Spirit-dependent life wherein we depend on the power of the Holy Spirit to keep the command.
Prayer
Lord, help me to love my enemies as you have loved me. Teach me to forgive and release the burden of bitterness. Fill me with your love, that I might reflect your character in all my relationships.
