Walking before God, honoring him by keeping his commands and doing his will, naturally leads to peace with him. A person who wants peace with God ought to walk uprightly before him. The Bible consistently warns us that certain wicked actions and sinful tendencies will inevitably take us to hell. This is because God is a holy God and does not dwell with wicked men or men who have willfully chosen to break his law. God is holy God. Only the righteous can dwell with him. If we want to be at peace with God, which will result in us dwelling with him and gaining favor and blessings from him, we must grow in righteousness. God wants us to be righteous, and he has given us the guide on how to be righteous. Paul teaches us in Romans that we are all sinful, and none of us is righteous, and none of us seeks after God. God, knowing that none of us could seek him or become righteous, gave us his own righteousness. We can become righteous in the presence of God not by keeping his law perfectly but by sharing in the righteousness of God. God gave us his righteousness through his son Jesus Christ. Jesus died in our place to make us righteous by giving us his own righteousness (Romans 3:21-26). We are now righteous and at peace with God because we share in the righteousness that he seeks-His righteousness. We obtained this righteousness only by faith in the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who died for us. People who are righteous before God live out their righteousness by offering their bodies as living sacrifices holy and acceptable to God. They have lives that are transformed by the work of the holy spirit in their lives. They no longer live gratifying every desire of the flesh but live for the glory of God by making daily commitments to work out their salvation with fear and trembling.
Reflection
No amount of good deeds will qualify us for peace with God. Peace with God is obtained only by sharing in his righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ, who died for our sins and gave us his righteousness. The righteousness that makes for peace with God is obtained only by faith in Jesus Christ. When we obtain the righteousness of Christ, we then get the ability to live a virtuous life. This virtuous life does not make us righteous but is evidence of the righteousness we have received.
Prayer
Father, thank your righteousness given to me through the gift of Jesus Christ. Help me to walk in righteousness. Give me the grace to fight against the sinful inclinations of my heart as I seek to live a virtuous life to your glory.
