It was time for Jesus to be born and Joseph and Mary are out of their resident area to be registered in the census as commanded by the Emperor. In the city of David where the child was to be born, the only available space was in a manger. A manger was a place where cattle were fed. It is not said that Joseph and Mary did not have money to pay for an inn, but the reason Jesus was born in a manger is because there was no room in the inn. The Message of Jesus’s birth is clear. Jesus was wrapped and laid in poverty so that we might be made rich. Though King, He came through people who were not financially rich, but who were rich in God’s side. It means that Jesus came for those who would acknowledge their spiritual poverty and turn to him (Matt 5:3; Isa 66:2). Therefore, Christmas is not a time to show how rich we are in buying new clothes, shoes, expensive food etc. It is a time of evaluating our spiritual state.
Reflection
This devotional reminds us that the birth of Jesus was marked not by wealth or comfort, but by humility and simplicity. Born in a manger, He came to bring spiritual richness to those who recognize their own need for God. Christmas, then, is not about showing off material wealth, but about reflecting on our spiritual state and turning to Jesus with a humble heart, acknowledging that true richness comes from Him, not from possessions.
Prayer
Turn to Christ to show your level of spiritual poverty because He alone makes rich.
