Content
These two verses are part of the prayers Jesus taught His disciples. It begins in verse 12, where they are to ask for forgiveness of their debts (restoration of personal fellowship with God broken by sin, not salvation) as they do so for others. The repetition in verses 14 and 16 was to stress the importance of the community of believers being a forgiving community if they needed their prayers to be answered (Psalm 66:18). As they have received forgiveness, so are they to forgive others, no matter what their sins are. So holding on to wrongs people have committed and refusing to forgive is asking God to lock us in the prison of His unforgiveness until we learn to forgive others (Matt 18:21-35). Forgiving others is essential in our Christian walk and relationships.
Reflection
Those who have received forgiveness should be motivated to forgive others.
Prayer
Trust God for grace to forgive no matter how hurt you may be.
