We respect people who have authority over us. However, we cannot do this if we do not recognize their authority. God, as the supreme authority in the universe, will not allow his people to be under the authority of a god or gods. The children of God were under slavery in Egypt to the Egyptians and their gods. God delivered his people from Egypt so that they might worship him, the one true God. He delivered them and made them understand that he is the only authority worthy of their respect by telling them, "You shall have no other gods before me." God like he did for Israel, delivers all who are His own. He delivers them so that they might have him as their one true God.

The worship of idols is the drinking from wells that cannot quench thirst, eating from sources that cannot satisfy, and living in habitats that cannot protect. God delivers his own from false idols so that they might enjoy him, the fount of living water; the water of eternally satisfying bread; and the ever-present refuge in trouble.

The people of God must have no other gods beside the Lord God, not because the Lord God cannot survive without them, but because they cannot survive without him. He does not need us. We need him. We must therefore not make anything our God but the LORD God.
