Paul considered himself a partner with Philemon in the ministry of the gospel and built his appeal for Onesimus on that fact, hoping that Philemon would consider him in the same light. When Paul uses the statement “if he has wronged you at all,” it puts a doubt in our minds whether Onesimus actually wronged Philemon or if he was just escaping from his slavery. But Paul committed himself to paying for anything Onesimus might owe his master. Accepting to pay for “anything” he might owe is a risky commitment to make. Yet he was ready to take steps to ensure that Onesimus was forgiven and reconciliation took place. Let us not be discouraged by the sacrifice involved in mediating forgiveness, but we should focus on the satisfaction that comes when we successfully mediate forgiveness for someone.
Reflection
Good works of righteousness are costly.
Prayer
Ask God for provision to carry on the assignment of mediation. Prayer for the CBC: Thank God for all the Chaplains serving in our health services facilities. Trust God that their ministry will bring many to Christ.
