The blessing of God, which is the coming of a Messiah through a woman without a well-known background, is a display of God’s commitment to shame the wise of this world. It is for that reason that Mary testifies in verses 51–53 that He has scattered the proud, brought down the mighty, and exalted those of humble estate. According to the proud and mighty, only those who are of a certain class deserve to receive recognition. Unfortunately, God doesn’t operate that way. God’s ways are not truly our ways. He doesn’t operate the way the world does. He uses very simple things to glorify Himself. This display of His sovereign choice is an invitation to praise Him. If men were to decide, Mary would have never been the right choice. Has someone told you that you will not make it in this life because of where you come from? Do not be discouraged; be encouraged by the fact that God is the one who exalts people of humble backgrounds to shame the proud and the arrogant.
Reflection
God’s choice of Mary—a young woman without status or fame—to bear the Messiah reminds us that God delights in working through the humble to overturn the values of this world. While the proud cling to power and recognition, God lifts up those who seem insignificant in the eyes of others, revealing that His wisdom runs deeper than human judgment. This truth invites us to trust Him even when others doubt our potential or dismiss our background. Just as He exalted Mary, God is able to use our simple, hidden, and humble places to display His glory. Therefore, we can walk with confidence, knowing that our worth and future are shaped not by human approval but by God’s sovereign grace.
Prayer
Plead with God to help you remain humble.
