The birth of Jesus was first announced to shepherds. What a strange way of God coming down to the people. Not only did He make it for the King to be born in a manger, the announcement of His birth did not go to the emperor nor kings first. But He chose the shepherds in the field. The role of the shepherd in this event is unique. Among the occupations of that time, shepherding had a very low place. The shepherds were considered untrustworthy and their work made them ceremonially unclean. What is the implication of the angels announcing the birth of the Messiah to common shepherds? It means that the gospel first came to the social outcast. It also symbolizes the fact that ordinary people are loved and cared for by God.
Reflection
The announcement of Jesus’ birth to the humble shepherds reminds us that God’s love reaches everyone, not just the powerful or influential. By choosing those considered lowly and unimportant, God shows that His message of hope and salvation is for all people, regardless of status or position. This teaches us that no one is overlooked in God’s eyes and that even the simplest, most ordinary lives are precious to Him. It encourages us to trust that God values us and calls us to share His love, no matter who we are or where we come from.
Prayer
Trust God to help you appreciate people just as God does.
