Forgiveness is not merely a matter of saying, “I forgive you.” It’s about releasing someone from a debt. Jesus forgives us by canceling the penalty for our sin. He wipes the slate clean. In these verses, Paul explains the profound work of Jesus on the cross; He forgave all our sins and canceled the "charge" that stood against us. Our sins, which once separated us from God, have been nailed to the cross, where Jesus bore the full weight of them. This was not a partial forgiveness; it was complete, and God calls us to offer that same level of forgiveness to others. Our forgiveness of others is not based on their actions or worthiness, but on God's abundant grace to us. Forgiveness is more than just moving on from a hurt; it’s about cancelling the "debt" that someone owes us.
Reflection
Think about someone who has wronged you. Are you holding onto a debt, expecting them to repay what they’ve taken from you emotionally or physically? True forgiveness is choosing to let go of the need for repayment, just as Christ has done for us.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for forgiving me completely and taking away the debt of my sins. Help me to forgive others as you have forgiven me.
