Forgiveness can be one of the most challenging aspects of the Christian walk. We all have moments where we feel deeply wronged by others, and it seems impossible to forgive them, especially when the hurt is repeated. Peter approached Jesus with a question that reflected a common human struggle: "How many times must I forgive someone who sins against me? Up to seven times?" Peter likely believed that seven was a generous number, but Jesus responded, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times." Jesus was not providing an exact number but instead emphasizing that forgiveness should be unlimited. This is evident in the parable that follows these words. The act of forgiveness should not be reduced to counting offenses or setting limits. In Christ’s eyes, forgiveness is an attitude, not a transaction based on numbers. We should forgive without keeping a tally of wrongs, knowing that this is the example Christ set for us when he ensured that all our sins would be forgiven through his death on the cross.
Reflection
Christian forgiveness should have no set quota. This is because we ought to forgive people, not because they are forgivable or easy to forgive, but because we were forgiven, even though it had to cost Jesus his life.
Prayer
Father, remind us daily of Your endless forgiveness toward us. Help us to extend that same grace to others, no matter how many times they hurt us. Prayer for the CBC: Thank God for the life, ministry, and Family of Min. Fubam Caroline, CBCWD Director emeritus, while praying for the new Director’s life, ministry, and family.
