Jesus in talking with Nicodemus at the beginning of this chapter states clearly that eternal life is found in Him alone and only those who believe in Him have this life. He underlines in our text that He is the reason and the source of eternal life. He says, “For God so Loved the world…” This phrase reveals that God is the source of love and the one who gave us the gift. It also unveils the reason for the gift namely God’s love. God has always loved the world, but there needed to be a way of showing that love so that man will be convinced about it. Giving his only son was love demonstrated in action. Love can be known only from the actions it prompts as God’s love is seen in the gift of His son. God’s love was not because of any worthiness of the ones He loved; it was a sacrifice. God did not just give us material things because of His love, but He gave us a life so that death sinners like us can live again (I Jn 3:1). This text assures us of God readiness to give us everything according to His will.
Reflection
John 3:16 reminds us that God’s love is not just a feeling but an action—one shown through the ultimate gift of His Son. Jesus makes it clear that eternal life is found in Him alone, and this gift flows purely from God’s unconditional love, not from any worthiness on our part. God didn’t offer temporary or material blessings; He offered life itself so that we, who were spiritually dead, could live again. This verse invites us to rest in the assurance that if God has already given us His very best, we can trust Him to provide everything else we need according to His will.
Prayer
Trust God to benefit from this eternal gift to humanity.
