Nations usually sign a document containing the terms for lasting peace at the end of a war, called a peace treaty. The war between mankind and God ended at the cross of Jesus Christ. That war did not only die at the cross but was buried in his grave, never to see the light of day again. The Holy Spirit of God, given to those who have believed in Jesus, is the peace treaty (Romans 8:6, 14:17). The dwelling of the Holy Spirit of God in his people is evidence that we are at peace with God. We do not need to work for peace with God. We do not need to look for peace. We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. We only need to believe it and live in the peace of God. As a child of God, you have peace with God that nothing can take away. The awareness of that peace should be your comfort when you face suffering in the form of hunger, persecution, hatred, temptations, and trials. Nothing listed here can take away that peace. We should make every effort to live at peace with the people around us (Rom. 12:18), not because that peace will make us have peace with God, but because we are forever at peace with God.
Reflection
Some peace treaties can be broken. Adolf Hitler and the Nazis broke the Versailles treaty before the ink could dry on the paper on which it was signed. The volatility of peace between people can make us think that peace with God is like that. Peace with God is not volatile. Peace with God is permanent and eternal because it is sealed with a peace treaty seal that can never be broken. Dwell comfortably in the peace you have with God.
Prayer
Father, help me by your spirit, not to look at my circumstances to determine how you feel toward me. Help me to never lose sight of the fact that I am eternally at peace with you because of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ for my sins.
