The apostle contrasts between the old and the new life (17- 24), stating that the deeds of the flesh grieve the Holy Spirit. Then, he states what a Christian’s attitude towards their neighbors should be. There should be no bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and slander in their lives. These are the repetitions of the old self and must be put away. Rather, they should display kindness, compassion, and forgiveness, qualities of a new/transformed heart that builds a community. Can you imagine how someone who is filled with bitterness (harbored resentment), anger, clamor, and wrath will relate to people around him/her? Such a person cannot be tender-hearted, compassionate, or forgiving. They will always want to take revenge when someone hurts them. Forgiveness is easy to do when we put away these vices, as enabled by the finished work of Christ.
Reflection
A transformed heart finds it easier to forgive.
Prayer
Pray that God will enable you to put away the vices still lingering in your life.
