One who was expected to gather the Jews in celebration of the birth of Jesus was threatened. It can be understood that Herod was worried that a new king was born, but the question Herod should have raised to himself before being hostile was, even if he is a king, when will he grew to maturity to take my place? But since he was already threatened and intimidated by the birth of this new King because of his craving for power, the news gave him so much negative tension. Herod was a suspicious man who killed His wife, mother and others just to maintain His position as the king. Jerusalem was trouble because they feared the reaction of Herod. The chief priest and Pharisees were completely indifferent about the news of Jesus’ birth. The gospel of Jesus today meets with such reaction from different groups of people. Those who reject it with so much aggression, and those who don’t care.
Reflection
Herod’s reaction to Jesus’ birth reminds us how fear and insecurity can blind the heart to God’s gifts. Instead of welcoming the hope and joy that Christ brings, Herod allowed his need for power to fill him with suspicion and hostility. Even today, the message of Jesus meets different responses—some reject it fiercely, others ignore it altogether. This passage invites us to examine our own hearts: do we welcome Christ with openness and trust, or do we let fear, pride, or indifference keep us from embracing His presence in our lives?
