The mediator works with the offender to ensure that there is repentance and regret for his/her actions. Paul called Onesimus his child in the context of leader- convert relationship (1 Cor 4:15). Onesimus became Paul’s child through conversion. Conversion made Onesimus useful, as his name implies. He might have been unprofitable at first, as he wronged his master and ran away. Philemon needs to see how useful Onesimus has become with his new faith in Christ. If the change in the one we are mediating forgiveness for is not clear, forgiveness might take place without reconciliation, for fear that hurts might still occur. It is important to ensure that the person we are mediating forgiveness for has repented and is a transformed person.
Reflection
Everyone who repents deserves forgiveness.
Prayer
Ask God for wisdom to work with the person you are mediation forgiveness for to truly change.
