Respecting our parents is one of the foundational commands in Scripture. God designed the family as the first place where children learn respect and love. Honoring our parents is not only about obedience but about valuing their role in our lives as God’s appointed authority figures. Ephesians 6:1-3 highlights the need to recognize the importance of parents’ guidance. The call to obey our parents is the first commandment with a promise. The promise is that honoring parents leads to blessings, including long life and well-being. This respect is an expression of obedience to God, as He has established parents as authorities in the family structure. Honor your parents not just in obedience but also in love and appreciation.
Reflection
Parents are God's representatives to their children. How a child treats his or her parents is not very different from how they treat God. As respect for God leads to eternal blessings, so also respect for parents leads to long life.
Prayer
Thank you, Father, for the parents you have placed in my life. Help me to honor them with respect and love, as you have commanded.
