Scripture presents to us a holy man who had lived his life waiting for the coming of the Lord’s Christ. His presence is a reassurance of the fact that Jesus is the Messiah. Simeon does not say that he has seen the Messiah but rather that his eyes have seen God’s salvation. Jesus is the Salvation of the world. He comforts those who are already in Him but are distress, like it was the case with Israel and He brings light to all those who have not yet accepted him, as it says, “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” So the same light that brings glory to Israel is the same that brings revelation to Israel. We all are Gentiles but in two categories, there are some who have receive this light and others have not yet. Receive His comfort if you have received Him already and receive his light if you have not yet received Him.
Reflection
This passage reminds us that Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promise and the true salvation for all. Simeon’s words show that seeing Jesus is seeing God’s salvation—He brings comfort to those who already trust in Him and light to those still searching. Just as He was a light to Israel and the Gentiles, He offers hope, guidance, and revelation to everyone today. We are called to either embrace His comforting presence if we already know Him or to open our hearts to His light if we have not yet accepted Him, allowing His love to transform and guide our lives.
Prayer
