Mary in her song of celebration, speaks of who God is. In our text, she underlines that God is a merciful God. God’s mercy is not for those who disrespect God or disrespect His mercy. It is for those who fear Him. Fear is not used in this text in the sense of “being frightened” that God might strike you down but in the sense of feeling awe and reverence at His power and love. Fear is humble obedience that seeks to please God. Mary is celebrating God for the mercy shown to her and the mercy available to those who fear God. God has always looked at those who fear Him with a peculiar favor (Deut 5:10; Psalm 103:17). In this case, He has manifested His mercy by sending His Son to bring salvation to His people from generation to generation. God’s mercy is also available for us today. We can benefit from his mercy by choosing to obey him and seeking to please Him.
Reflection
Mary’s song reminds us that God’s mercy flows toward hearts that approach Him with awe, humility, and a desire to please Him. Her celebration is not just about what God did for her personally, but about the enduring character of God—a God whose mercy stretches from generation to generation for those who honor Him. This “fear” she speaks of is not terror but reverence, the posture of a life aligned with God’s will. As God favored Mary, He continues to look with compassion on all who walk in humble obedience, offering salvation and steadfast love that never fades. Today, His mercy remains open to us as we choose to trust Him, obey Him, and live in reverent gratitude for His unfailing grace.
Prayer
Commit yourself to humbly obey God so that you will continue to experience His mercy. Pray for the CBC: Pray for the Cameroon Baptist Convention (CBC) and its members, that they may continue to live out their faith in a way that honours God.
