Parents have the responsibility to teach their children respect, not just through words, but by their own actions. The way parents treat their children can either build or undermine their respect for authority, including respect for God. Our text teaches that fathers are not to embitter their children, which can lead to discouragement. When parents lead with love, patience, and kindness, they teach their children how to respect others. However, when they are harsh, unkind, brutal, verbally abusive, etc., they unintentionally teach the same behavior to their children. Children learn respect through observing their parents’ behavior and responses to situations. By modeling godly behavior, beginning with respecting their children, parents set an example of respect. Make it a commitment to intentionally teach respect to your children through your actions. If you are a child, consider how you can show respect for your parents by acknowledging their role in your life.
Reflection
Someone has said that respect is a two-way street; you have to give respect to receive respect. While children are lower than their parents in family hierarchy, they are not lower than them in their status as human beings created in the image of God. They deserve to be respected by their parents. Parents will make their children respectful by modeling respect to them in the way they treat them.
Prayer
Lord, help me to be a good example of respect to my children and others. Teach me to lead with patience and love, reflecting Your character in all that I do.
