In today’s text, Mary takes us to a life situation that demonstrates that God is able to do great things. In Mary’s situation, He has demonstrated His mighty power in helping Israel in remembrance of His mercy (v. 54). His people were oppressed for a very long time by sin, but through the coming of the Messiah, God has lifted up His people in remembrance of His mercy (Ps 136:23; Rom 5:8). God has also demonstrated His mighty power by fulfilling what He promised to the people of old (v. 55). It was many years after the promise made to Abraham concerning a seed in Genesis 12 that God visited Mary. Surely many people became discouraged and did not believe that the promise would ultimately be fulfilled. Mary has not only seen the days of fulfillment, but the fulfillment of the promise will happen through her. This great deed of the Lord could only push her to celebrate God.
Reflection
Mary’s story reminds us that God’s faithfulness is not bound by time, circumstance, or human expectation; even when His promises seem delayed or impossible, He is steadily working in remembrance of His mercy. Just as He lifted Israel from long oppression and fulfilled the ancient promise to Abraham through the unlikely vessel of a young woman, God shows that He is able to accomplish great things in ways we could never foresee. Mary’s joy becomes a model for us—an invitation to trust God’s timing, believe in His power, and celebrate His goodness even before we see the full unfolding of His promises in our own lives.
