The apostle in this passage talks of the consequences of Christ death, but we are considering it at the time of His birth because He died because He was born in the human flesh. The paragraph begins by stating the apostle’s new view of everyone who has Christ as Lord and master. He does not see anyone superficially in terms of nationality but in terms of spiritual status. “All this is from” is a look back to the new attitude (v16) because of the new creation (v17). The writer points the source of the new attitude and new creation to God. God did all this by sending His Son who came to the world in human form, serving among sinners though without sin, and reconciled us sinners to Himself (Rom 5:10). God’s reconciling work is not a one day issue, but He keeps doing it daily because we are sinful and in the flesh.
Reflection
Christ’s birth reminds us that God began His reconciling work by sending His Son to enter our world and share our humanity, and through His life and death He made a way for us to become new creations. Because of this, we no longer view ourselves or others from a worldly perspective, but through the lens of what Christ has done. God is the source of this new life, and He continues His work of reconciliation in us daily, patiently restoring and renewing us even as we struggle with our human weaknesses.
