Fear can paralyze you, but God protects his children from such paralysis by giving them at salvation a spirit that has no fear. The most paralyzing fear a person can have is the fear of death. However, when you know that Jesus died the death you deserved, and that those who die with him will be raised with him, the fear that makes you unable to live right is banished from the heart. You are a true Christian when no longer fear to love people, including even those people who seem unlovable. You love everyone well because you know that Jesus loved you, not because you were lovable, but because Jesus was loving. You are a true Christian when you take authoritative action for God because you understand that you act not by your own authority but by the authority of your loving God. A true Christian demonstrates self-control in situations where fear might tempt them to take ungodly actions.
Reflection
How do you know that you are truly living the way a Christian ought to live? A life marked by authoritative action for God, love for God and neighbor, and remarkable self-control is a life that has experienced the transformative power of God's salvation. If you still live in fear of suffering, adversity, and death, you must ask God to give you that Christlike spirit that was marked by love, self control and had no fear, including the fear of death.
Prayer
Help me, dear heavenly Father, to truly believe in the fearless spirit you have given me now that I am your child saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Strengthen me with your presence today, and help me to live boldly and confidently in love.
