How you act toward your employer will either confirm or discredit your Christian profession of faith. Put differently, how you act toward your employer will make them more likely to respect the God you serve or not. It will also make it more likely for them to listen to the gospel or not. Our passage tells us that respect for masters or bosses should happen so that the name of God and the gospel are not blasphemed or reviled. This means that the way we act toward our employers can influence how they think about God and the gospel. If we act poorly, it will make them think poorly of the God we serve, since our attitude reflects the attitude of the God we serve. If we act poorly, it will also make them doubt the saving power of the gospel we preach, since our poor attitude might make them think that we are not saved. It will also make them hate the gospel. A Christians attitude in the workplace, then, should be lived out with the constant awareness that it is either speaking well of the gospel and God or influencing people to think ill of God and the gospel. Now, what about Christians masters? Paul tells us that Christians must serve their Christian masters or bosses better than they do the unbelieving masters because their good service benefits believers. The instruction in verse 2 to serve Christian masters even better is a helpful reminder to Christians that they ought not to take advantage of their Christian bosses by being careless with their work.
Reflection
How you act in the workplace reflects your attitude toward God and the gospel. Good, diligent, and respectful conduct is a sign that you want people to view your God as one who wants you to be good, diligent, and respectful. It also speaks well of the gospel and draws people to both.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to respect my employer through hard work and diligence with my work. Help me bear a good testimony about you and the gospel through the way I do my job.
