In our text, Yahweh declares His authority over the people He has created. He also expresses His commitment to saving His people. He also exposes what He desires to do with His people. He wants them to be a light for the gentiles. Through the covenant established with them, He wants to draw the gentiles closer to Himself. This has always been the purpose of Israel’s call (Exod 19:5–6). This will be possible through the mission of God’s servant, who has been raised as the light to the nations. In John 8:12, Jesus will confirm this when He says, "I am the light of the world." This appointment brings hope not just to Israel but to all nations. The people who were in darkness will now see the light (Matthew 4:16). Blind eyes will be opened, and the captives will be liberated. This was fulfilled through Israel’s deliverance from Babylon and ultimately through the ministry of Jesus (Matt 4:23). Jesus is the light of the world. Salvation in Christ Jesus is for all who believe. People of all ethnic groups can come to faith. Proclaim the gospel to all people.
Reflection
God’s heart has always reached beyond borders. In this passage, we see His deep desire not only to save His chosen people but to make them a light for others. Israel was never meant to keep God’s glory to itself — their calling was a bridge through which the nations could come to know Him. In Jesus, this promise finds its perfect fulfillment. He is the true Light of the world, shining into every dark corner, breaking every chain, and opening the eyes of those who could not see. His light is not limited by tribe, tongue, or nation. As followers of Christ, we are now bearers of that same light. Our mission is clear — to reflect His glory and proclaim His salvation to all people, so that those still in darkness may see and live.
