The very first commandment in the Bible about Human relationships is the commandment to honor fathers and mothers. The fact that this commandment comes immediately after commandments prescribing the relationship between God and mankind indicates that parental authority stands above all human authority. The command in the text is that children must honor their fathers and their mothers. This statement is non-negotiable. In God's world, children do not have a choice. God expects them to honor their fathers and their mothers. They cannot choose to honor one parent and not the other. Both parents deserve honor. This honor means holding them in high esteem. It goes beyond obedience. Honor here means submitting to one's parents with one's heart, mind, and strength. Given this command, Parents must seek to be the godly kinds of parents to whom this commandment is applicable so that their children will find it easy to obey it. Children must follow the example of the Lord Jesus, who was willing to die in obedience to his Father as a way of honoring him, as they honor godly parents.
Reflection
The first command on human relationships in the Bible is the command to honor parents. This highlights the place of parental authority in a child's life. It serves as a reminder to parents to take their responsibility as parents seriously. They should not give birth to children and hand them to other people to raise. They must do their job of raising their children. If they do it well, they will also give their children the chance to obey the command in our passage.
Prayer
Prayer: Dear heavenly father, thank you for the gift of parents. Help me to be a good, godly parent to my children. Help the children in my church learn, understand, and apply this command.
